The Mission
Central Idea
We believe that the current industry practice of filmmaking is harmful to those who participate, inaccessible to most and hinders the cultural potential of filmic exploration. Instead we can foster the exploration of transformative, expressive, and revolutionary film if we can find a way to facilitate filmmaking in an accessible, diverse and healthy environment. In nurturing the voices and stories previously locked out from this medium we can evolve the artform.
The Film Cult has formed due to a need for this alternative environment. We have come together to build a bright alternative to the current filmmaking practice to reveal what is possible.
The Current Situation
TW: mental health discussions
The film industry is harmful to those who participate. Those going into film report higher than the national average in depression, panic attacks, anxiety disorders, alcohol or drug dependence, PTSD, eating disorders and nervous breakdowns.
These are not the signs of a vibrant creative space.
The film industry is an inaccessible space and one that is harmful to participants once inside. We do not believe this is how the creation of such an important medium should take place.
Unions are a powerful structure for workers rights and one we support. The difficulty comes when we are negotiating with a broken system. Little plasters on gaping wounds is not what we are interested in. Strained negotiation isnβt leading to the reform the medium requires. We have splintered from the group and plan on venturing out to find an alternative.
